Chapter Eleven

Two hours, a mind-numbing amount of paperwork, and several coffees later, I had a new job as Kace’s executive secretary, my dog had a salary, and I was worried I’d lost my mind. Losing my mind didn’t seem like a bad thing when I considered all the perks my new employment offered. The first floor boasted a coffee shop, the executive floor had enough coffee machines to tame my sister’s ravenous desire for caffeine, and there was even a gym with showers for those who wanted to get in some exercise during the day.

My sister would kill me when she found out.

For a chance at a good salary and decent work conditions, I’d deal with the risk of death at my sister’s hands. Then again, I placed the blame for how things had turned out directly on her shoulders. If she hadn’t wandered off, I wouldn’t have needed to take care of her kids or rely on Kace. My car would still be alive, too. My luck hadn’t soured until she’d wandered off and left me at the mercy of her children and her business partner.

I waited for Kace in HR’s reception area, wondering how Virtue handled her adventure with James. I wanted to be the one to take her to the vet, but before Kace’s takeover and decision to hire me, taking her in hadn’t been an option at all. Instead of being upset for myself for not being a good puppy mother, I’d be grateful she was being taken care of.

I could handle it without crying or snapping at anyone.

The elevator opened, but instead of Kace, an older woman in a blazer and skirt strode into the room, and she wore a pair of knee-high boots I’d consider killing for. While I stared at her feet, wondering how a pair of simple black boots could possibly look so damned good, she strode to the reception desk. “Where is she, Theresa?”

I tore my attention from the woman’s boots to the receptionist. To my dismay, the woman pointed at me. “Please try to return her in the same condition, or Mr. Dannicks will become upset. You’ll also want to let him know when you’re returning her to his residence or the office, or he’ll become upset. He also messaged me asking to ensure you’re taking her away from the building to feed her.”

Narrowing my eyes, I considered how to make Kace pay for handing me off to a babysitter. “I wasn’t planning on running off or anything.”

Theresa laughed. “His meeting is running over, and your former employer is attempting to get you back. Mr. Dannicks isn’t having any of that, so he asked Mrs. Carter for a favor, as you need some work-appropriate attire anyway.” The receptionist picked up an envelope and handed it to the woman. “Here’s a company credit card authorized for your use, Mrs. Carter. Mr. Dannicks says you’re to use it at will. Her entire wardrobe needs to be overhauled.”

“My wardrobe isn’t that bad,” I protested.
